Category: Let's talk
Hey boys and girls. I am not angry as I post this, but it is a little funny. Today I was talking to a guy at the water cooler and I strolled over to the pantry to retrieve my sandwich out of the fridge. The pantry is right beside my office. So he's still standing there and he says, Darren! Darren. I say, yes? He says, you're in the wrong room. I say, No I am just in here to get my sandwich. He says, oh sorry about that Darren. I am awful sorry. I thought you were heading for your office. I suppose you probably have a better sense of direction than I do. You probably memorize everything. Do you find it easy to memorize new places? Do you memorize everything in a new place after one or two times?
OMG, I get that all the time! It really irks me sometimes.
People just automatically assume, that just because I'm blind, that I need to be lead around by the collar as it were, and or that I need them to hold my hand and carefully guide me in the right direction, and they're just so amazed, when they discover, that the blind girl, really does in fact, know her way around, and can get around, all by her blind self!
That's so, so, so, so right! And, what's more, people don't ask me if I need help or not! It's: "Oh! The little blind girl is lost and needs help!" that's what's going in there heads. One time, someone said: "She was trying to walk through the wall." arghghgh! I wish I could show them... everybody who doesn't believe that blind people can do something by themselvs, what they can really do!
why? why? why sighted people think we blind are helpless!
What annoys me sometimes is when I'm at school, and I'm just walking to my next class, and someone says, "Watch out for that pole!" I mean, I know they mean well, but don't you think that after having been at that school for three years, I would be aware of the presence of "that pole," as well as all the other poles around the school?
